Choosing The Right Antiseptic for the Application

Track:

Career Level:

Selecting the appropriate antiseptic for each clinical application is a critical component of your infection prevention standard of care. This session reviews evidence based guidance on the use of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and povidone iodine (PVP I), highlighting differences in mechanism of action, safety considerations, and recommended use across perioperative settings. Current guidelines for skin preparation, preoperative bathing, nasal decolonization, vaginal preparation, and wound irrigation are discussed to reinforce a “right molecule, right situation” approach that balances antimicrobial efficacy with patient safety.
