Nursing Home Dialysis Dens: Unique Infection Prevention and Control Considerations

Track: CDC/NHSN

Career Level: All Career Stages

Session Description: Hemodialysis care for nursing home residents is shifting from traditional outpatient dialysis facilities to hemodialysis dens located inside nursing home buildings. Some of the appeal of onsite hemodialysis includes cutting transportation costs, increased frequency of dialysis treatments, and easier hemodialysis placement for high acuity residents. However, nursing home hemodialysis dens present unique infection prevention and control considerations. During this session, experts will detail responsibilities nursing homes should consider when starting onsite hemodialysis, oversight of hemodialysis treatments by dialysis provider organizations in the nursing home setting, staffing for dialysis care, and gaps in regulatory oversight and surveillance. Examples of disease transmission and infection prevention breaches occurring in the care of nursing home residents receiving hemodialysis will be discussed.
